A huge Grazie to my baby sister Evelyn Cirignotta Photography and Nicole Cruisinberry Photography for many of the images on this website.
A brief history on the Trinacria. The trinacria is major symbol of Sicilian culture. The word means triangle and refers to the shape of the island. In the Trinacria, the head of Medusa stands in the center. She is surrounded by three bent running legs and often has stalks of wheat and ears of corn or other fruits and vegetables around her. The food represents the fertility of the land. The goddess herself was known for her help to fight the forces of evil. The three legs have represented many things over the course of history, whether it be land, sea, sky; life, death, rebirth; past, present, future; father, mother, child; the three trimesters of human pregnancy; and many others.
The snakes on Medusa's head are said to represent the natural cycle of life, symbolizing rebirth and death. Medusa was also said to have wings, which represent freedom.
This particular trinacria was designed using my Nonna’s face as the center. She is our Matriach. It’s because of her that I’m living this dream.
